Sponsored by Below is a brief summary of Mike's outstanding accomplishments:A Long Beach resident for more than 40 years, Mike Cruz graduated from Long Beach High School and went on to attend Nassau Community College and SUNY Old Westbury College where he majored in social sciences.Mike has been a long time advocate for social justice, especially for the Latino community. He founded the first Hispanic youth center in Long Beach in 1969.His prior employment includes the Long Beach school district, the Long Beach Economic Opportunity Council and Circulo de la Hispanidad. The City of Long Beach has employed Mike for more than 20 years, serving first as a code enforcement officer and then as the Superintendent of Sanitation. He was Commissioner of the Long Beach Housing Authority for over 15 years and is now Coordinator of Environmental and Community affairs for the City of Long Beach. Community involvement has always been an important part of Mike’s life. He volunteered for the Martin Luther King Center, for the Long Beach Community School, the Long Beach Hospital, and for Project Challenge among other organizations. Mike was Board President of the Long Beach Latino Civic Association and a former board member of CASA in Nassau County. He also holds a New York State Real Estate License.Mike has always been a firm believer in the importance of advocating for human rights, quality education, leadership development, civic participation, and cultural pride.The "2013 TOP 25 ADVOCATES FOR LATINO EMPOWERMENT" AWARDS RECEPTION takes place on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, 6pm to 8pm, at the Westbury Manor.
