The evening will be dedicated to the three honoriees from this first event. A VIP pre-event reception will be held prior to the official ceremony for family, friends and sponsors. Sponsors will also receive a table for 10 which includes the reception, with serverd food and open bar, followed by the dinner and festivities. General admission will be for the dinner cash bar and festivities. We are looking forward to all graduating classes from the High School to be represented by year, but also want to recognize that all of us are part of the Cardinal family, no matter what year we attended. This event will be a combined reunion of all the classes.
Patrick Mediate a Physical Education Teacher at GHS includes six others who have been active professionals in the Town of Greenwich for many years have formed a committee to make this a reality.
“Greenwich High School has maintained one of the best athletic programs across all sports in the country,” said Mr. Mediate. “We felt the time had come to honor the achievements of those athletes that had performed to the highest levels during their years at the school,” he added. “The field of possible athletes from which to choose was quite large but we do feel that the three we chose to be in our first class of inductees represent the highest curve of excellence which all three continued after they graduated,” he added. Mr. Mediate said that the committee will meet once every two years to select additional members from the ranks of Greenwich High School’s numerous sports programs, including coaches and entire teams.
The three inductees will be honored on Sunday October 20 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Old Greenwich. There will be a reception and dinner from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. All three inductees have agreed to attend and will each deliver short acceptance speeches.
Young, Merz and Bella, along with future inductees, will have their names inscribed on a Hall of Fame plaque which will be housed in the athletic wing at Greenwich High"Hopefully we will be able give the people in town, not just the kids, an understanding of the amazing things that have happened in Greenwich athletics," said Middle School Principal, Ralph Mayo, class of 1971. "Steve, Sue and Zeke -- they all fought to get where they are. There was a lot of hard work involved. They're all inspiring people."
