Former Today Show host Meredith Vieira will make TV history Friday night by becoming the first woman to handle Olympics hosting coverage solo.
The 60-year-old broadcasting veteran has been in Sochi as a special correspondent for NBC. But following Bob Costas’ unfortunately timed case of pink eye, she’s going to be taking over Friday night’s coverage from her former Today partner Matt Lauer.
“It’s an honor to fill in for him,” Vieira said on the Today show Friday morning. “You think about the Olympics, and you think the athletes and then Bob Costas.”
Costas had made a record 157 consecutive appearances as NBC’s Olympics anchor in prime time. Tuesday night was the first time since 1988 that Costas did not host NBC’s coverage – Lauer hosted the past three nights. Costas is expected back next week.
