Kohl's surprises Chewbacca mask-wearing woman with $2,500 and more masks

By Cox Media Group National Content Desk

Candace Payne's Facebook Live video of herself laughing uncontrollably in a Kohl's parking lot while wearing a Chewbacca mask racked up more than 100 million views on the social media platform -- more views than any other recording has garnered on the streaming service.

"I'd like to say that I bought this for my son, who would really, really want it," the 37-year-old mother of two says in the video. "He'll probably take it from me. However, this is mine. When it's said and done, at the end of the day, this is mine that I bought and I'm going to keep it for my own."

The video prompted "Star Wars" fans everywhere to rush out to get the mask.

A Kohl's representative told Forbes that the "Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens Chewbacca Electronic Mask," made by Hasbro was originally $44.99 but was put on clearance after Payne's video sparked "an overwhelming amount of interest." It sold out on Kohls.com by Friday afternoon.

The price of the mask was inflated by sellers on Amazon.

To thank Payne, a Kohl’s representative visited her home in Grand Prairie, Texas, with surprise gifts for her and her family.

"We don't want you to stress about having to share your Chewbacca mask so we confiscated masks for everybody," the representative said, playing on words Payne used in her video.

Payne was given three Chewbacca masks for her children and husband and presented with $2,500 in Kohl’s gift cards, 10,000 rewards points for use at the store and a load of "Star Wars" toys for her and her family.

"Candace didn't want to share her Chewbacca mask. So we showed up to make sure she didn't have to,” Kohl’s captioned a video of the exchange, titling it "The happiest Chewbacca."

The video has been viewed more than 7 million times.
