Arizona elected to part ways with head football coach Rich Rodriguez on Tuesday evening and the move comes at a (very) strange time in the college football calendar. Coaches at Power-5 institutions are rarely ousted in January and, to make things even more interesting, Rodriguez was kept through the bowl game despite reports that the decision had been made prior to the Wildcats taking the field in late December.
Following the move, Rodriguez released a series of statements on Twitter but, while he was relatively quick to defend himself publicly, that was not the only support that the now-fired head coach received. Former Arizona quarterback Matt Scott weighed in on Twitter and made an interesting comparison to Wildcats basketball coach Sean Miller.
How you gonna fire @CoachRodAZ over a false story and say "we wanted to reaffirm our commitment to our values" and your not gonna fire Miller for paying players? Smh yall look stupid
More and more detail will likely surface with regard to the way Arizona elected to proceed with Rodriguez but at least one of his former players was not pleased and made himself known in clear terms in the immediate aftermath of the story.
