Is there life after Mariano?

Many might not understand the “big deal” baseball fans make over their favorite players. Take for example Mariano Rivera who yesterday injured himself in quite possibly a career ending way. The feeling among fans is one of loss almost as if a member of the family has gone.

Nobody died and yet it feels like a big deal. The non-baseball fan must understand that the game is a microcosm of life. A team sets out to work together like a family to accomplish an everyday goal to win. Obviously there are differences. Pro baseball players are compensated with high salaries for their everyday play.

They also play role model for kids (big ones too!). Team work pays off as each player has a role that when executed properly makes things happen in a positive way.

Mariano Rivera’s closing pitcher role for the Yankees seemed superhuman, finish what everyone else started. There seemed certainty in a world where things aren’t always so consistent. Like a superhero, there he was to save the day and give us faith that things can go right when we put our best foot forward.

Where can Yankee fans go from here?
