The last few weeks have been tough for the people of Massapequa Park. First, the shocking arrest of Rex Heuermann, the man alleged to be the Gilgo Beach serial killer, a man they called one of their own...a neighbor. Then, the nearly two week investigation into the Heuermann property. Long days of street closures, news trucks and cameras, helicopters and drones above.

The one many seemed to have forgotten about was Heuremann’s family. His wife, Asa, and two kids. Their lives upended. Living with a husband and father, who according to authorities, was living two different lives.

This past week, the town of Massapequa Park banded together, and sent care packages to the Heuremann family to let their neighbor know they were thinking of them. “Dear Neighbors, We are thinking of you through this difficult time,” the note read. “If there’s anything we can do please let us know.”

It’s important to remember in times like this that we as Long Islanders come together & take care of our own in their times of crisis & need.
