Next time you’re in a crowded place, keep an eye on your credit card statement afterwards.
Ghost Tapping is the new credit card scam, tricking innocents everywhere. Thieves use cheap, generic card readers, bump into you and trigger a wireless transaction from a tappable chip credit card in your wallet.
Crazy part is, they don’t even need to physically touch your back pocket or purse, just get pretty close. And it could also trigger a transaction from the mobile wallet. (So password protect that mobile wallet ASAP)
This scam targets crowded spaces like public transportation, and concerts.
Like typical scammers, these thieves start by taking small transactions so it’s less noticeable to the victim, but they can add your card to THEIR digital wallets to make larger purchases later on.
How do you keep yourself safe? RFID-blocking wallet / phone case or phone case has been tested as one of the better options at the cost of about $20.
A cheaper option is RFID-blocking card sleeves for an average of 200 cents a piece. Downside? It’s inconvenient to keep taking your cards in and out of them.
