The CDC Kindly Asks Us to Stop Kissing and Snuggling Turtles

TURTLE

If you don’t have kids and this news hits hard, you’re officially not an average joe . . .

The CDC is kindly asking Americans to please stop “kissing” and “snuggling” TURTLES.  (???)

There’s a salmonella outbreak in 11 states that’s linked to pet turtles.  Even if they’re healthy, they can have it in their droppings.  Then it can spread to their shell or tank, and onto your hands.  Or if you’re kissing them . . . onto your LIPS.

At least 26 people have gotten sick, and nine had to be hospitalized.  Thankfully, the CDC hasn’t reported any deaths.

Fun fact:  Small turtles and baby turtles tend to be the biggest drivers of these outbreaks.  So in 1975, the federal government banned the sale of turtles with shells less than four inches long.

The CDC says any half-decent pet store doesn’t sell turtles that small.  But they’re still sold illegally online, and at flea markets.  (So if you’re turtle shopping at any flea markets this month, bring a ruler.)
