It’s more like a Black-and-Blue Light Special at Kmart these days. They’ve taken a beating from Walmart, Target, and Amazon.
Kmart just announced its last full-sized store in the U.S. is closing next month. The location in Bridgehampton, New York on Long Island will shut its doors on October 20th.
A smaller Kmart in Miami will be the last one operating in the lower 48. They still have a few remaining stores in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam.
The first Kmart opened in Garden City, Michigan in 1962, and by the early ‘90s, there were over 2,300 Kmarts across the country. However, they went bankrupt in 2002, merged with Sears, and went bankrupt again in 2018.
Even the last location in Miami isn’t much of a Kmart these days. They recently sub-leased most of it to the home furnishing chain, At Home.
The only part that is still a Kmart is a small section that used to be their garden department.
