If you drive on Long Island (and let’s be real, who doesn’t?), you may want to pay extra attention to the road lately. New York State has updated its DMV point system, and the changes mean certain traffic violations can now add up faster than before.
Under the new rules, some offenses carry more points, and others that didn’t previously hit as hard can now push drivers closer to license suspension territory. Things like speeding in work zones, street racing, or leaving the scene of an injury crash are getting more serious attention from the DMV.
The goal, according to the state, is to better identify repeat offenders and improve road safety, especially as traffic continues to ramp up across Long Island. But for everyday drivers, it also means even one bad decision behind the wheel could have bigger consequences.
Stay safe, Long Island!
