Millennials, it’s time to head back to the beach.

Nearly 20 years after Aquamarine became a beloved coming-of-age favorite, Emma Roberts is officially returning to the franchise for a brand-new Disney+ television series.

Roberts will reprise her role as Claire Brown while also serving as an executive producer on the pilot. The upcoming series has received a pilot order from Disney+ and Disney Channel, bringing the magical world of Aquamarine to a new generation while giving longtime fans a nostalgic return to one of the most iconic teen films of the 2000s.

Speaking exclusively with People, Roberts admitted she didn’t expect the project to hit her emotionally.

“I remember when I read the pilot, I literally got choked up,” she shared. “I didn’t think I would have such an emotional reaction to it, but I definitely got a little teary-eyed.” She added that she’s excited to bring Claire back to life as an adult.

The original 2006 film starred Roberts alongside JoJo and Sara Paxton, telling the story of two best friends whose lives are forever changed after meeting a mermaid named Aquamarine during one unforgettable summer. Over the years, the movie has become a cult classic thanks to its themes of friendship, growing up, and a healthy dose of Y2K nostalgia.

Production on the pilot is expected to take place in Wilmington, North Carolina, with fans already hoping more familiar faces from the original cast will make a return.

While there’s no official premiere date just yet, one thing is certain: Aquamarine is making waves once again.
