Johnny Orlando Joins the Tangorra Takeover
The 18 year old, Canadian pop star chatted with Nick Tangorra, host of the Tangorra Takeover ahead of his US Radio Debut on 106.1 BLI!
Johnny Orlando’s latest single “I Don’t” with DVBBS is an ABSOLUTE SMASH HIT, but it almost never got released! Johnny explained, “The process for that song started like two years ago when I recorded that song (”I Don’t”). We made it the same day I wrote (and recorded) “Adelaide” so both of these songs are now just coming out. They were written when I was freshly 16. So... it’s crazy to see it out. It kinda just sat in a dropbox folder for a couple years while we figured out what to do with it because I knew it was a good song, but I didn’t know what it was going to turn into... what it was going to be in the end. It was actually my A&R’s idea to get DVBBS on the track so.... GREAT idea!”
Dvbbs (pronounced “dubs”) is a Canadian production duo composed of brothers Chris Chronicles and Alex Andre. Johnny sang their praises, “DVBBS absolutely killed it. When the DVBBS collab was confirmed that was like one of the happiest moments that I had in a very long time. I’m really glad that it all came together the way it did and the video... that was a weird one to shoot. We had to get tested and it was a small crew. But I was just really excited to drive that car... a 64 Impala.. it was a great day!”
Nick Tangorra followed up with Johnny asking him where he gets his inspiration for writing his music. “Most of the time it’s like the end product is derived from an experience or a person. Rarely do I fully stick to the script of something that actually happened in my life unless it’s like a ridiculous experience that I just wanna write about,” Johnny said.
“Usually I’ll be in a session and it’s always like ‘Oh what have you been doing lately? What do you have going on in your life?’ Every writer always asks you that because they just wanna figure out something to write about. And it kinda just... just off the dome like you just kinda talk.”
Speaking about the day he wrote his single “Adelaide”, Johnny explained how it all came to be. “I remember when I went in that day, I was mad about something... some girl... I don’t even remember who it is…”
Nick asked, “So her name was NOT Adelaide?”
Johnny laughed, “No it wasn’t! Adelaide was a list of baby names. We looked for three syllable baby names...” And then we saw Adelaide... and I was like this is sick.”
And that’s when Adelaide was born! Johnny admitted the team almost went with a different name for the song. “It was going to be Caroline, but there’s too many songs that say Caroline already.”
With his debut album in the works, aiming to release in late 2021, we asked Johnny on when he might potentially hit the road again and if there were any nerves at all in returning to the stage. “Nervous for sure.” Johnny explained, “I want everybody to be safe of course. Also very excited about the prospect of being able to get on stage again. If I could do a festival or my own shows at some point this year, if it’s safe, I would love to do that. If not, I’ll wait… I guess we’ve been waiting for a year and a half. I can wait a little bit longer.”
This could be sooner rather than later because Johnny did exclusively tell the Tangorra Takeover that there are talks of maybe something for this year! “I’m really excited to get back into it. There are talks of like... late 2021; depending on the vaccine situation or early 2022.”And as far as WHO he’d tour with, Johnny told us it’d be a total dream come true to tour with The Weeknd! “The Weeknd and Travis Scott have really good shows so I feel like I could learn a lot for sure! And Post Malone !!”
Johnny is a MASSIVE Talent with a great head on his shoulder and a smash hit on his hands! " I Don’t " definitely garners a big TWO THUMSB UP and we here at 106.1 BLI were honored to be his US Radio Debut of his latest single!
