Millennials, This Is Not a Drill: Jessica Simpson Is Getting Her Own Netflix Documentary!

Dust off the low-rise jeans because one of the biggest pop culture icons of the early 2000s is officially heading back in front of the cameras.

Netflix announced that a feature-length documentary about Jessica Simpson’s life and career is coming in 2027. And for anyone who lived through the glory days of MTV, TRL and Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, this could be a serious nostalgia trip.

Netflix says Simpson is inviting cameras back into her life to “tell all” more than 20 years after Newlyweds turned her and then-husband Nick Lachey into reality TV royalty. The MTV series ran for three seasons from 2003 to 2005 and became one of the defining celebrity reality shows of the era.

From Pop Princess to Billion-Dollar Businesswoman

There is a LOT of ground for this documentary to cover.

Simpson broke onto the pop scene in 1999 with her debut album Sweet Kisses and the hit “I Wanna Love You Forever.” She went on to sell more than 20 million records worldwide, while simultaneously becoming one of the most recognizable celebrities of the 2000s. (Netflix)

But music and reality TV were only part of the story.

Simpson went on to build the Jessica Simpson Collection into a billion-dollar fashion business and became a New York Times bestselling author with her revealing 2020 memoir, Open Book. The memoir pulled back the curtain on everything from fame and body image to relationships and her struggles with alcohol.

Jessica Simpson’s Comeback Is Already Underway

The timing of the documentary is especially interesting because Simpson has recently stepped back into the music world.

After a 15-year break from releasing original music, she returned in 2025 with two Nashville Canyon EPs and began performing again. Her musical comeback also arrived during another major change in her personal life, following her 2025 separation from husband Eric Johnson, with whom she shares three children.

Who Is Making the Jessica Simpson Netflix Documentary?

Netflix has tapped BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Joe Pearlman to direct. Pearlman has plenty of experience telling the stories of major stars, having worked on projects including Robbie Williams, Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now and Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts.

There is also a pretty perfect MTV connection behind the scenes: former MTV Networks boss Van Toffler is producing the documentary. He was running MTV Networks during the era when Newlyweds helped make Jessica and Nick household names.

Netflix has not announced an exact premiere date or official title yet, only confirming that the documentary will arrive sometime in 2027.

One thing is certain: between the pop-star years, Newlyweds, very public relationships, tabloid scrutiny, motherhood, sobriety, a billion-dollar business and her return to music, Jessica Simpson has more than enough material for a documentary.

And millennials? We will be seated.
