New York City already has rats, pigeons, subway creatures and people who somehow think it’s acceptable to blast music from their phones on the train. Now, apparently, we have mole people.
The NYPD is investigating a new video showing three people climbing out of a Manhattan manhole in the middle of the night, near 32nd Street and Seventh Avenue — just blocks from Penn Station and Madison Square Garden. And these weren’t exactly dressed for a night out. They were reportedly wearing headlamps and overalls, looking less like tourists and more like they were returning from a shift in the underground mines.
And this isn’t the first time. Similar videos have popped up in Brooklyn, where groups of people were caught going into and coming out of the city’s sewer system. Authorities believe they may be searching for valuables that accidentally fall into the sewer system — basically, underground treasure hunters.
Which raises an important question: WHAT exactly are you hoping to find down there?
“Hey honey, I’m going out for a few hours.”
“Where?”
“Penn Station.”
“Oh, are you taking the train?”
“No, I’m going treasure hunting in a sewer.”
The city says entering manholes and sewer systems is illegal and extremely dangerous, with risks including toxic gases, flooding, unstable surfaces and confined spaces.
So if you see three guys wearing headlamps suddenly emerge from a manhole at 4 in the morning… don’t panic.
Just assume they’re either looking for a lost Rolex…
or they’re late for the 4:12 train.
