The Weeknd is the hottest trend in music today! The singer announced the title this February “After Hours” after sharing the songs “Blinding Lights” and “Heartless In November. He took on a whole new direction through this album as moody, long, and somewhat restless, it is never as spell binding as his old work nor as advanced as his newer material.
On this album the narrator (The Weeknd) is being brutally honest about his lifestyle and mental disposition. That is to say, as the title suggests, he presents himself as a “heartless” individual. One is that he carelessly engages in sensual affairs with a bunch of different women. Some of these ladies are groupies, while others are just naïve enough to be ‘sold dreams’ by the celebrity. And secondly, The Weeknd is what can be classified as a substance addict. Or put euphemistically, he regularly enjoys the consumption of hardcore intoxicants
Another direction is his sound through each song. Besides bringing an old school vibe back in the 80’s and 90’s, he tells the story through his experience and lifestyle through the lights. While the song’s dark atmospherics are reminiscent of the Weeknd’s early music, there is a noticeable thematic shift: “After Hours” is an apology for who he was and a vow to change.
This is the Weeknd at his most repentant and cliche, willing to give it all up just to hold her close.
