1 dead, 3 injured after vehicle crashes into Savannah post office

SAVANNAH, Ga. — One woman died and three people were injured Saturday when a vehicle crashed into a Savannah post office, authorities said.

According to a preliminary investigation by the Savannah Police Department, Phyllis Champion, 82, was attempting to park her Toyota Corolla in the parking lot at around 11:45 a.m. when she mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brake, WSAV reported.

The vehicle jumped the curb and crashed through a glass window, according to WTGS. The Toyota struck three customers and one employee, the television station reported.

Jessie Allen, 67, who was a customer, died as a result of her injuries, WSAV reported. Two other customers -- Clyde Wilson, 65, and Glendora Baldwin, 64 -- and an employee, Chantel Manley, 33, were taken to an area hospital for treatment, the television station reported.

Wilson sustained serious injuries, WTGS reported. Champion was not injured, the television station reported.

Savannah Police said the crash was accidental, WTOC reported.
