DOTHAN, Ala. — An investigation into synthetic opioid trafficking in southern Alabama has resulted in the arrest of two men and the seizure of approximately 11,000 fentanyl pills, authorities said on Tuesday.

In a news release, the Dothan Police Department said that Roland Whitfield, 22, and Dewayne Chambers, 53, both of Dothan were arrested and charged with fentanyl trafficking.

According to police, investigators executed search warrants on Monday. In addition to the fentanyl pills -- which were already pressed -- officials seized an electronic money counter, $9,166 in cash, two firearms and approximately 129 grams of fentanyl powder.

Investigators estimated the street value of the narcotics at approximately $250,000, AL.com reported.

“While this outcome represents an important step in protecting public safety, we recognize that the threat posed by fentanyl and other dangerous narcotics remains ongoing,” Dothan police Chief William Benny said in a statement.

Benny added that there had been an increase in fentanyl within Dothan and launched investigations to discover the source of distribution.

“As a result of these efforts, a significant quantity of fentanyl has been removed from circulation and will not reach the streets of Dothan,” he said.

Whitfield and Chambers are being held in the Houston County Jail, AL.com reported.
