Hunter shot, killed after dog stepped on rifle in backseat of truck

SUMNER COUNTY, Kan. — A hunter was shot and killed over the weekend after his dog stepped on a rifle in the backseat of a truck in Kansas.

Joseph Smith,30, died during a hunting trip, according to KAKE.

The Sumner County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called out to Geuda Springs, Kansas, Saturday just before 10 a.m. for a shooting, according to CBS News. Smith was found in the front passenger seat of his truck minutes after the call was placed. First responders performed life-saving measures but Smith was pronounced dead.

The shooting happened in the 1600 block of East 80th Street, according to KSNW.

Smith was sitting in the front passenger seat when the dog accidentally stepped on the rifle, according to People Magazine. The bullet from the rifle hit Smith.

The dog was found in the back seat with hunting gear by first responders, according to CBS News.

According to KSNW, it is not clear if anyone else was in the truck or if the truck was moving at the time of the incident.
