USGS: More than 40 earthquakes shake same Nevada area in 17-hour span

A remote section of Nevada has experienced 40 earthquakes and aftershocks in a 17-hour period, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quakes began in the area Tuesday with the strongest, a magnitude 5.1 quake, hitting at 11:33 p.m. PT near Mina, Nevada.

Mina is about 100 miles southeast of Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

More than three dozen quakes have hit the area since Tuesday, including two with a 4.3 magnitude and several others in the 2 to 3 magnitude range.

There have been no reports of damage or any injuries from the quakes. According to The Mercury News, the quake was felt as far away as the San Joaquin and Sacramento valleys in California.

The quake’s epicenter was located in the ghost town of Candelaria, Nevada, located about 15 miles south of Mina, according to the USGS.
